It has a plastic brush with small combs, so you can fill the lashes directly into the mascara. But it doesn't clump and it doesn't feel heavy for me. The mascara also builds up really well. With each extra layer, you build up more volume. The mascara is black well and does not harden. The mascara does not stain me and is easy to remove with my favorite cleansing balm.
